Understanding Pai's Climate
Pai has a tropical savanna climate with three distinct seasons. Being in a mountain valley (elevation ~400m), temperatures are cooler than lowland Thailand, especially at night. The climate is one of Pai's biggest attractions — it's never oppressively hot, and the cool season is genuinely refreshing.
The Three Seasons
Cool/Dry Season (November - February)
Temperature: 15-30°C (59-86°F)
Rain: Very little
Best for: Sightseeing, trekking, outdoor activities
This is peak season for good reason. Days are warm and sunny, nights are cool enough for a light jacket, and rain is rare. Mornings can be foggy, creating beautiful misty mountain scenery. Book accommodation in advance during this period.
Hot Season (March - May)
Temperature: 22-38°C (72-100°F)
Rain: Occasional thunderstorms
Best for: Water activities, finding deals on accommodation
April and May are the hottest months. It's still bearable thanks to Pai's elevation and afternoon breezes. This is low season, so accommodation is cheaper and crowds are smaller. The burning season (March) can bring haze — check air quality reports.
Rainy/Green Season (June - October)
Temperature: 22-32°C (72-90°F)
Rain: Regular afternoon showers
Best for: Waterfalls, lush scenery, lowest prices
The green season is underrated. Mornings are typically clear and sunny, with rain arriving mid-afternoon. The countryside is incredibly lush and beautiful. Waterfalls are at their most powerful. And you'll have many attractions to yourself.
